Exercise Prescription

The gold standard for rehabilitation, exercise prescription is a step-by-step process of returning the body to normal movement patterns and function. Exercise prescription and appropriate programming provide a basis for being able to perform the activities necessary for daily life.
Here at Functional Performance & Physiotherapy everyone will recieve some form of exercise prescription.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy, or manipulative therapy, is a hands-on approach to injury management. It is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal pain and disability; based on the guided movement of the joints through ranges and planes that may simply be impossible to accomplish yourself. Regaining range of motion is the first step towards pain-free joint movement

Dry Needling

Dry Needling involves multiple advances of an acupuncture-type needle into the ‘trigger point’ of the muscle. The aim is to achieve a local twitch response to release muscle tension and pain. The needles used are very thin, and you may or may not feel the needle enter your skin.
If the target muscle is shortened and supersensitive you will feel cramping or a twitch sensation. This is very short-lasting, and patients soon learn to recognise this sensation as therapeutic as it is followed by a feeling of pain relief and muscle relaxation.

Common conditions

Back and Neck Pain

Back and neck pain is the largest presentation to our clinic, over 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point during their lifetime and has the potential to cause significant disability. Neck pain can often lead to headaches and difficulty performing everyday activities such as driving, bathing or getting a decent night’s sleep. Treatment of neck pain requires an understanding of the cause of your symptoms.

Musculoskeletal Injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries are ones that involve muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves or related soft tissues including strains, sprains or inflammation. Usually, those nagging pains and discomforts don’t seem to get any better. Physiotherapy is well placed to assess these injuries, promote optimal recovery of the damaged tissues and re-educate functional movement patterns for the affected joints.

Orthopaedic and

Post-Op Rehabilitation

This type of rehabilitation refers to injuries of the skeleton and related structures such as joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and a number of other anatomical structures. Some of these types of injuries require surgical repair by an orthopaedic surgeon. The rehabilitation of both surgical and non-surgical orthopaedic injuries requires specialised Physiotherapy care to restore normal movement, strength and control to the affected area. We have the experience to ensure the optimum recovery from all types of orthopaedic injuries and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Dynamic Core Stability

Dynamic core stability physiotherapy refers to the capacity to stabilise the lower back and pelvic girdle during complex movements through the recruitment of the deep muscles of the abdomen, lower back and pelvis. Core stability helps to reduce the risk of injury by providing optimum posture when stationary or with activity.
Poor core stability results in poor posture, inefficient power transfer from the lower body to the upper and vice versa, and a pronounced increase in the risk of injuries to many body areas including the spine (neck & back) and the lower limbs. Many types of injury can adversely affect the capacity of the stabilising muscles resulting in reduced core stability, which may then result in an increased risk of re-injury or further injury. Retraining of the core stabilising muscles is often a crucial part of any rehabilitation program following an injury.

Work-Related Injuries

We apply an active model to the rehabilitation of work-related injuries. We aim to restore the injured worker back to full function in much the same way an injured athlete is returned to sports.
